Six days, ten states & 2,421 miles (and counting)

After six days (counting our kickoff day on Friday, August 2), we have traveled through 10 states (counting Pennsylvania) and driven a total of 2,421 miles. So many miles that I had to find a Toyota dealer in Amarillo to have the Prius get its 20,000 mile service.

This is a big country with lots to see and learn. The highlight for the kids seems to have been Mammoth Cave (which I expect will be eclipsed by the Grand Canyon). It's been stressful at times but also fun. We have not been eating the best, but I'm trying. The kids seem preoccupied in the car with their iPhones but they have started a scavenger hunt which is keeping them somewhat occupied. And today we took a longer drive back to Albuquerque from Roswell and drove through some beautiful and breathtaking scenery. Clare especially enjoyed the drive. We drove not far from the Trinity atom bomb site (now the White Sands Missile Range) but did not visit as it is closed to the public.

There is a lot of driving, but you can't avoid that if you want to drive to the Grand Canyon. It's a bit faster than expected what with speed limits of 70 mph and 75 mph, and a new car that cruises nicely at 80 mph. We try to make at least one "attraction" stop a day to break up the monotony of the driving and to give the driver a rest. We also stop for "own made" sandwiches for lunch. So far, no sign of Tastykakes in Texas or New Mexico.
