National Civil Rights Museum

After Graceland, our plan was to visit the National Civil Rights Museum which is housed in the former Lorraine Motel. I was last here in 1996 and was greatly moved by the exhibits in the museum.  I wanted Clare and Conor to have the same experience I did.

Alas, the museum was closed for major renovations. We were able to visit an annex which is housed in the old boardinghouse where James Earl Ray fired the fatal shot that killed Martin Luther King, Jr. The exhibits there explored the assasination and various conpiracy theories surrounding the killing. They were very informative and provocative.

Here's a photo of the balcony of the Lorraine Motel where King was standing when he was shot.
